Stabilized Myanmar Camphor burl wood
Beautiful, unique piece of camphor root burl wood from Myanmar. This wood is perfect for crafting a custom handle to your own design.
The camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora) belongs to the laurel family and originally comes from Taiwan, Japan, and southeastern China. Today, larger populations can also be found in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. These trees can grow up to 30 meters tall and often reach a great age, featuring the characteristic glossy, leathery leaves typical of the laurel family.
Camphor wood has a distinctive, strong, spicy aroma that many people recognize from cold rubs or tiger balm. The camphor oil present in all parts of the plant plays an important role in medicine and is also used in perfume production.
This wood wins over every woodworker with its silky appearance. It is medium-hard, with a density of approx. 550–650 kg/m³, and is excellent to work with. It is also highly resistant to rot and potential pests. For this reason, old sea chests were traditionally made from camphor wood: it wasn’t attacked by exotic insects, and the laundry stored inside always smelled pleasantly fresh.
The tree can develop exceptionally large burls, showing a beautifully fine, wild grain. Colors can range from light brown-grey, yellow-green, and reddish brown to deep dark red.
