The heartwood has a warm dark brown appearance. Sometimes there will even be a grayish, purple or reddish glow. In contrast, the sapwood is colored creamy white and to counteract these color differences the wood is often steamed. There is also a beautiful wood pattern.
American walnut is considered to be very durable wood. Processing and finishing is, provided a straight grain, very easy. However, sometimes it can also have a wavy or tangled grain. This creates a beautiful wood pattern, but processing becomes more difficult.
