Hand-forged Japanese chisels IOROI NOMI
These high-quality hand-forged chisels IOROI NOMI have a blade length of approx. 60 mm, a total length of approx. 230 mm and a blade thickness of approx. 5 mm and are available in different widths.
The blade of this Japanese chisel IOROI NOMI is forged by hand from two layers. A soft carrier layer that transitions into the shank and a hard cutting edge layer. These traditional Japanese chisels are made of Japanese shirogami #1 steel (White paper steel) and are not rust resistant.
White paper steel is an extremely high quality carbon steel made from iron sand. This steel is ideal for cutting tools and chisels. The steel types are not simply forged on top of each other, but are encapsulated during forging. This ensures even better adhesion of the two steel types.
These Japanese IOROI NOMI chisels have a concave back. This ensures less resistance during work and ensures that these chisels are easy to sharpen.
When you sharpen the chisel, this must be done in a special way. First, you 'just' sharpen the cutting edge. The back of the chisel is hollow, it changes when you sharpen the cutting edge. This is also restored by lightly grinding the underside. The hand-forged chisel is machined flat, an excellent combination for a good chisel.
The handle is made of red oak. There is a striking ring on the back of the chisel, which extends the life of the handle.
Please note: on Japanese woodworking chisels, the metal ring at the end of the handle may still be loose when the chisel is delivered. This is not a defect, but part of the traditional way these tools are finished and prepared.
The ring, called a katsura, protects the wooden handle from splitting when the chisel is struck with a hammer. Before use, the katsura should be properly seated by gently tapping it down and carefully peening the wood at the end of the handle so it folds slightly over the ring.
This reflects the traditional Japanese approach to tools: a chisel is not always considered completely ready straight from the box. Sharpening, adjusting and preparing the tool are part of making it your own and ensuring it performs at its best.
