Hand-Forged Japanese Chisels Fujikawa Oukyo Series

These Kinari Nomi come from the FUJIKAWA forge in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture. These exceptionally well-crafted paring chisels are forged and welded and stand up to any comparison.

The overall length for all sizes is approximately 340 mm, the handle length is 165 mm, and the handle diameter is 22 to 24 mm. The handle is made of white oak.

The blade of this Japanese Kinari chisel from Fujikawa is hand-forged from two layers: a soft steel layer that transitions into the shank and a hard cutting layer. These traditional Japanese chisels are made of Japanese shirogami #1 steel (white paper steel) and are not rust-resistant. The cutting edge is very durable, and the back is hollow-ground for easy sharpening. This planing chisel is built for fine woodworking. The handle is made of Japanese white oak.

White paper steel is an extremely high-carbon steel, made from iron sand. This steel is ideal for cutting tools and chisels. The steels are not simply forged together, but encapsulated during the forging process. This ensures an even better bond between the two steels.

These Japanese Fujikawa chisels have a concave back. This reduces resistance while working and makes these chisels easy to sharpen.

When sharpening the chisel, it must be done in a special way. First, you simply sharpen the cutting edge. The back of the chisel is concave, which changes when you sharpen the cutting edge. You also correct this by lightly sharpening the underside. The hand-forged chisel is milled flat, an excellent combination for a good chisel.

The long handle is made of white oak. These chisels are designed for hand-finishing wood; they cannot be struck with a hammer. Kinari Nomi chisels are used for plane-off small amounts of material in carpentry work, without the need for a hammer.
