YELLOW POPLAR (Liriodndron tulipifera)

Also called American Tulip Wood, Magnolia, Tulip Wood and Yellow Poplar.

This type of wood is called tulips because the tulip tree has very beautiful tulip-like flowers and the tree leaf also has something of a tulip shape.

Yellow-white hardwood species. Slightly soft and very stable. Wider planks sometimes have a green core that turns brown due to the light. The wood is also called American Poplars, but botanically has nothing to do with Poplars.

Tulip wood is easy to work with and has a nice smooth finish. That is why it is regularly used in traditional kitchen furniture / cabinets that are painted opaque. It is particularly suitable for panel doors. Because it is so stable and dimensionally stable, it is also used for billiard tables.

Japanese Tulip Wood (Honoki or Magnolia hypoleuca) is used in traditional Japanese handles. Often in combination with a buffalo horn bolster. (Honoki wood should not be confused with Hinoki wood, this is wood from the Japanese Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and is widely used for cutting boards). American and Japanese tulip wood is similar in color and stability, but American tulip wood sometimes has a slightly more green-yellow glow.
