This item is sold out.

Traditional damascus steel,

Hand-forged damascus steel with a straight pattern. Each piece is unique! The piece is made of 9Cr18Mov as core steel and a softer rust resistant layer (416 Rvs. (35 layers each side)) on the outside. Rockwell hardness of 57 for the core layer and 40 for the damascus outer layer.

  • dimension: 250mm x 38mm x 3mm

The steel is delivered 'black' and uncut, with forged skin. The steel is already hardened! grinding can only be done on water stones.

ATTENTION: the photos with the visible damask layers are for illustration purposes only, this piece of steel is delivered uncut and unetched but is hardened.

This steel can be etched with iron (III) chloride (fecl3) or with hydrochloric acid (10%), etching with hydrochloric acid takes much longer but hydrochloric acid is readily available in the construction market. On photo 4 the steel can be seen without etching and on photo 5 and 6 the effect of about 1 minute of etching with iron (III) chloride can be seen.

It is also possible to hammer patterns into the steel yourself, the steel must then be "tempered" again becaus of its current hardness, this can be done by carrying out the following steps:

  • 1st step - the steel has to be annealed to a cherry red color (about 800 degrees), then let it cool slowly (not in water!)
  • 2nd step - with a suitable hammer it is possible to hammer figures in the steel
  • 3rd step - After cooling, the steel can be ground to the desired geometry. However, the cut must be at least 1 mm thick to prevent tearing.
  • 4th step - Now the steel must be heated to about 1050 degrees, and then hardened in preheated water (50 degrees)
  • 5th step, let it cool down and then another few hours in the oven at 200 degrees
  • 6th step, sharpening to a razor sharpness on Japanese water stones.
